EU White Paper on Artificial Intelligence
If you are part of the AI research community and you are planning to propose an EU+US NGI experiment related to AI in one of the upcoming open calls of NGIatlantic.eu, this white paper is definitely relevant for you!
Last February, the EU Commission has published the White Paper on Artificial Intelligence, a set of policy options on how to achieve the Commission's objective: promoting the uptake of AI, while at the same time protecting the European citizens from its potential risks. Artificial Intelligence, in fact, will positively affect our lives in many ways, but also entangles many risks!
The European approach builds on the European strategy for AI presented in April 2018: Europe must act as one and define its own way of addressing the opportunities and challenges of an Artificial Intelligence based on European values.
Europe's growth is depending more and more on value created by data. AI being one of the most important applications in the data economy, the promotion of a trustworhy AI opens up a lot of new opportunities, as Europe can combine its technological and industrial strenghts with a high-quality digital infrastructure and regulatory framework, based on the respect of fundamental rights such as human dignity and privacy protection.
Two are the building blocks of the White Paper:
- A policy framework setting out measures to align efforts at European, national and regional level, in order to achieve an "ecosystem of excellence".
- The key elements for the creation of an "ecosystem of trust", ensuring compliance with EU rules, especially for AI systems that pose a high risk.
A Commission Report accompanying the White Paper also includes the implications of AI, Internet of Things and other digital technologies for safety and liability legislation.
We believe that NGIatlantic.eu joint EU-US experiments revolving around AI are going to contribute to shape the future of NGI as expected on both sides of the Atlantic!
